Psappha
Internationally acclaimed singers Jane Irwin and John Graham Hall join Psappha in Schoenberg’s artfully crafted, pared-down arrangement of Mahler’s gorgeous Song of the Earth, settings of six poems of Chinese origin, better known in its symphonic version. Nicholas Kok conducts an adventurous programme of beguiling harmonies and unusual timbres which also features works by György Ligeti, popularly known for the presence of his music in Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Tracey Redfern shows off her technical virtuosity in this arrangement, for solo trumpet and ensemble, of three coloratura arias from his darkly comic opera Le grand macabre. And, under its Principal Conductor, Psappha applies its usual panache to Ligeti’s Chamber Concerto for 13 instrumentalists which, from its subterranean-like opening sonorities to the winding-down clockwork of the final movement, conjures an atmospheric soundworld that is both compelling and eerie.
