Psappha: The Lighthouse
In celebration of the 75th birthday of Psappha patron and Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, the awardwinning music theatre ensemble presents a major new production of his chamber opera, The Lighthouse. Part ghost story, part psychological drama, this chilling piece has received over 100 different productions worldwide since its premiere in 1980. It is based on the true story of three lighthouse keepers – tenor, baritone and bass – who mysteriously disappeared from their remote, wave-washed eyrie in 1900. Building to a thrilling climax, The Lighthouse shows off the composer’s highly expressive and individual musical voice, interspersed with Victorian ballad and hymns, in what promises to be a gripping, theatrical evening.
Following this performance, the production will tour to, amongst other places, Orkney’s St. Magnus Festival.

'No composer since Britten has managed to capture the seawith more unforgiving, magnificent and unsentimental tones or convey horror, psychological entanglements and extreme situations more suggestively.'
